As per the Protection of women from Sexual Harassment Act (POSH Act.), the Indian Government has made it mandatory for any business setup with more than 10 employees to form an Internal Complaints Committee to address sexual harassment in the workplace. In 2023, in the Addabarie Tea Estate, where ETP is implementing the Plantation Community Empowerment Programme, the estate management asked ETP to support the orientation of the Internal Complaints Committee to ensure a better understanding of the POSH Act. and gender rights issues.

UN Women has influenced the government with this change, and through the government’s actions, estates are being held accountable to support progress in relation to sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment. The Plantation Community Empowerment Programme is supporting interested estates in setting up and ensuring the orientation of these committees.
